11/1/2004: Are Alpacas Exotic Animals or Livestock
According to Webster's Dictionary, livestock is defined as "useful animals kept or raised on a farm or ranch" while exotic is defined as "being of foreign origin." It is true that alpacas were imported from South America over a decade ago but now there is a large North American herd of alpacas being bred and raised here, thus, adding much value to the American fiber industry. Due to the lack of laws and regulations in Pennsylvania, it has been at the discretion of local governments to dictate their own policies regarding the classification of alpacas.

Download this article to learn what one farm had to do to avoid having their alpacas classified as "exotic animals." Also learn how you can make sure your alpacas are clasified as livestock, avoiding the need to obtain an exotic animal permit.

1/21/2006: BVDV Testing and Control Practices for Alpaca Herds

As you are aware Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus is a growing concern for alpaca breeders. Listed below is an outline that addresses: BVDV Testing and Control Practices for Alpaca Herds. Please take a few moments to review this information and we encourage you to share it with your clients and friends in the industry. Along with most of the other Alpaca Shows this spring the PAOBA Breeders Showcase will be requiring that all alpacas that enter the show have a negative PCR test for Bovine Viral Diarrhea. Alpacas will only need to have this test one time so there are no testing date requirements, but you should plan accordingly to have the results in time for the shows.
