Saturday, May 10 10:00 am CREATIVE FINANCING STRATEGIES FOR ALPACA PRODUCERS or FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO BECOME ALPACA PRODUCERS
Speaker: Dennis K. Hall
  Senior Economic Development Analyst for Pagrows coming to The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture from the Keystone Agricultural Innovation Center where he was a Penn State Extension Business Planning and Marketing Development Regional Educator.

Prior to the above, he served as the President and CEO of an international corporation providing business and strategic planning services to Fortune 5, 50 and 500 companies from offices in eight states, the District of Columbia and four European counties. He holds an undergraduate degree in Economics and Finance, and graduate degrees in Psychology, Counseling Psychology and Program Administration. Additionally, he has held faculty and administration positions in higher education, as well as providing leadership to a children’s psychiatric residential treatment facility.

He is the author of over 150 professional and scholarly publications, and presentations. The thread that has stitched together his rich and diverse career has been the desire to assist individuals and groups of people in achieving their goals through building new processes, rehabilitating challenged systems, or seeking innovative directions of travel. He daily seeks to increase diversity in opportunity, enhance inclusivity and achieve operational excellence through high levels of customer service management. He grew up in the agricultural and banking communities as a result of his parents’ careers.
Dennis is married to Sandra Parker Hall; they have two adult sons and two grandchildren.

Saturday, May 10 11:00 am DEWORMING & VACCINATION PROTOCOLS - WHAT'S NEW
Speaker: Heather K. Henry, VMD, Creekview Veterinary Services
  Dr. Henry is local to the central Pennsylvania area and was raised in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County. As a young girl and teenager, she was an avid horsewoman and showed on the Hunter circuit many weekends. She completed her undergraduate degree in Large Animal Science at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, she pursued her doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine and attended the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia. Upon graduation in the spring of 2001, Dr. Henry moved to Northeast PA for the duration of 1 year. During the summer of 2002, she returned home and started her own ambulatory large animal practice which encompasses all large animal species including Camelids.

Dr. Henry also practices small animal medicine on a part-time basis. When Dr. Henry is not busy visiting farms (sometimes with her 2 year old daughter) and practicing medicine she enjoys the outdoors with her family and two dogs!
 
Abstract: Come hear the information every breeder needs to know about developing a deworming and vaccination program!!
  • We will review the typical vaccination and deworming protocols used in the Northeast for both cria and adult Camelids.
  • If time allows, an overview of the more common diseases of Camelids will be discussed.

Speaker: Tina Weston (President, PAOBA), Forest Glen Alpacas
Chris Works (President-Elect, PAOBA), Kendall Creek Farms
  Tina Weston:
Tina has been in the alpaca industry for 5 years now. Her farm Forest Glen Alpacas is located in North Western Pa. She owns and runs the farm with her husband Doug and 2 kids, Hunter and Heather. 25 Huacaya alpacas make their home there. We are expanding to include Suris as well in 2008. She has been a Veterinary Technician for 22 years. This experience has served her well in attending to the health of her herd as well as her boarders. She is involved in many aspects of the alpaca industry, currently serving as President of PAOBA and Show Coordinator. Her farm provides boarding and agisting services, sheering, sales, mentoring services, and there is a gift shop selling alpaca products.

Chris Works:
Chris Works’ background prior to becoming an alpaca rancher in 1997 is in Forest Products manufacturing, namely composite panel products. His previous work experience includes managing facilities with over 400 employees and $80 million in annual sales and participation in the design and construction of four manufacturing operations. He has a B.S. in Forestry and Wood Chemistry. He and his wife Lori are now the owners of a local retail business and Kendall Creek Farms Alpacas. They live in the beautiful hills of northwestern Pennsylvania, just outside of Bradford. They are the proud parents of a 14 year old, Forrest, and currently have 52 Huacaya on the farm.

Chris has been a voting member of AOBA, ARI, and MAPACA since 1997 and of PAOBA since its inception. He is currently serving on the PAOBA Board of Directors as President-Elect. Over the last ten years he and Kendall Creek Farms have been involved in the industry in the form of show participation, ring stewarding, sponsorship, and most certainly the social interaction and lifestyle the industry is famous for.

Speaker: Stevi T. (Alpaca Encounters, Montville, NJ)
  Stevi has created award-winning sculptures and Fiber Art sold worldwide. She is a single parent that supported her 3 children for the past 17 years with her artwork.

Stevi has been a member of the Original Doll Artist of America (ODACA) since 1996 and an AOBA member since 2001. Her artwork is regularly featured in Contemporary Doll, Dolls, Teddybear Magazine and News Articles Nationwide with an exclusive line sold only through E-BAY.

Stevi's first purchase of Alpacas was inspired by the versatility of the Alpaca – how it would incorporate with her artwork to create a new and exciting market with signature designs. This would create an immediate income while building her herd.

Stevi is very involved in community events with an educational program for children where they have learned about the process from fiber to fashion. Instructional classes in Needle felting are taught at many events.

Sunday, May 11 10:00 am PASTURE PRINCIPLES MANAGEMENT FOR NON-TECHNICAL FOLKS
Speaker: Mark Goodson, Agronomist, USDA NRCS
  Mark Goodson is an agronomist living in Springettsbury Township York County. He is employed as state agronomist by the Natural Resources Conservation Service of The United States Department of Agriculture in Harrisburg. Mark served as the County Agent for agronomy with Penn State Cooperative Extension in York County from 1999 to 2006. There he established a Pasture Management Program for Recreational Horse Owners in York County that included field lessons, and pasture walks at private landowners farms. Mark studied agronomy at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown PA as well as at Penn State.

Sunday, May 11 11:00 am SKIRTING AND PREPARING YOUR FLEECE FOR SHOW OR MILL
Speaker: Wini Labrecque (Star Weaver Farm), Fiber professional & textile artist
  Wini Labrecque has made fiber her profession, studying, training and evaluating its properties from both a scientific and hands on approach. As a textile artist, she has developed a solid background and interest in a wide variety of techniques for utilization of fiber from raw state to finished product. Since the late 1980's, utilizing natural fibers, Wini has been spinning, weaving, knitting and felting. Her handspun skeins and woven/knit goods are sold at area art festivals and in area specialty shops. Once exposed to alpacas and their wonderful fiber, she has been utilizing and promoting the fiber to everyone who will listen.

Wini lectures on all aspects of fiber as well as gives classes in beginning spinning, felting, and/or weaving to individuals or small groups. She is a Fiber Arts judge as well as a judge for spin offs, hand spun and mill spun skein competitions, an AOBA apprentice fleece judge, and currently completing certification as a Camelid fiber grader/sorter.
 
Abstract: Processing your fleece into roving or yarn is becoming more and more popular for individual farms. Mini mills are popping up everywhere.

This seminar will discuss the process your fleece goes through at a mill to become finished yarn as well as the different possibilities available to you for yarn structure.

We will also review what is required from you to get the best product back from the mill.

Samples will be displayed to help with the hands-on feel of the yarn processed.

  Elaine has been a fiber artisan and instructor for the past 20 plus years. As a national award winning Angora rabbit breeder her interest in fiber production and the finest of fibers drew her naturally to Alpaca fiber. For the past 5 years Elaine has expressed her devotion to Alpaca through her work with individual breeders to improve their breeding programs, provide education about Alpaca fiber to the public at events like the PA Farm Show, Alpaca shows and through her judging of Handcrafter's Spin Off. Elaine is committed to the improvement American Alpaca Fiber and to helping Alpaca breeders to become competitive in textile industry and the lucrative hand-crafter's market.
Abstract: Elaine explains the process and results of the Handcrafter's Spin Off.

Learn to use this unique evaluation to market your fiber to handcrafters who are willing to pay top dollar for good Alpaca fiber well presented.

Elaine also explains how to use the results of the Spin Off to have your best fiber prepared by independent mills for your own use or sale.
