 | Rabid Llama Found Diagnosis in York County PVL reported the first llama in Pennsylvania positive for rabies on December 15. The York County animal was first seen with a poor appetite on Sunday and by Tuesday did not want to stand up. Some facial swelling and paralysis was noted, and by Thursday the llama had become aggressive to humans and other animals. The llama was confined but chewed through a barn door and possibly bit one or more other llamas before it was found dead Thursday afternoon. The llama had never been vaccinated against rabies. PVL routinely reports cattle and horses with rabies, and rabid sheep and goats are also encountered with some regularity, so it comes as no surprise to see a llama with this disease. The exposure was most likely to a rabid raccoon; 15 have been confirmed positive in York County so far this year. |
